Numerical Cognition

Numerical cognition includes six components: the number sense, the mentalnumber line, the numerical processing, calculation, numerical processing, number comprehension and number production.

Number sense

An innate ability to recognize, compare, add, and subtract quantities without counting.

Mentalnumber line

Is an ordinal spatial representation of quantities and is built with experience. It´s an imaginary line of numbers ordered in an ascending series.

Calculation

Developed during formal education. Means the performance of basic mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Numerical processing

Includes number comprehension and number production.

Number comprehension

Responsible for understanding the nature of numeric symbols associated with their quantities.

Number production

Reading and writing and counting numbers.
